Who wants to work in: Camberley

When there are countless towns across the UK in which to work, how do the unique aspects of Camberley make it a hidden gem? A town that can combine the atmosphere of working in a friendly community with all of the benefits of big brands and easy access should not be disregarded!

Getting Around

At 75 minutes for peak hour travel into Waterloo, what Camberley lacks in high-speed connections to London it makes up for in road access, the town centre being minutes from the M3 and benefiting from comprehensive local bus services. Sitting on the edge of Surrey, bordering both Berkshire and Hampshire, this town sees regular visitors from three counties.

Accomplished Alumni

Readers of a certain age will be delighted to learn that ’80’s icons Bros were local college boys. Conversely, the edgy Agincourt rock venue means that there is a level of cool to Camberley’s history that is often overlooked. The punk and rock club has been running every Saturday since the early ‘60s and has played host to legends such as the Rolling Stones, Cream and The Who.

Elephants Never Forget

Arguably Camberley’s most famous resident, the white pipe elephant sits resplendent on London Road. This sculpture was created for the Lord Mayor’s Show in 1963 and was subsequently erected at the entrance to the yard of Trollope & Colls. When they closed down, the upkeep of the elephant was written into the tenancy contract, so subsequent businesses have continued to look after it. It is idiosyncrasies like this that make Camberley an appealingly British place to work.

Night Owls

Camberley Theatre has seen something of a resurgence in recent years. With refurbished auditorium seating and a rejuvenated programme, there are plenty of opportunities for work socials at this venue, from a spangly Christmas panto trip to an evening of giggles with one of the big name comedians that now frequent the space. Following the construction of the Atrium in 2008, Camberley is permeated with a huge variety of eateries and bars. Wining and dining are abundant in the town, which makes both networking and socials an effortless prospect.

Shop ’til you Drop

The Atrium is just under a decade old but has played a significant part in the modernisation of Camberley and its increased commercial attractiveness. Playing host not only to shops but restaurants, bars and a cinema, this development has everything under its roof. With Summer events offering an urban beach, farmers market and street food, there are even tonnes of London’s South Bank running into this unassuming Surrey town!

Lunchtime Leisure

Unlike many towns where the sports centre is positioned on the outskirts, Camberley’s Arena Leisure Centre is just next door to the Atrium complex at the centre of town. Location is ever important – with so central a resource allowing you to squeeze in a pre-work swim or lunchtime Zumba class, work-life balance is that little bit more achievable.  If workouts aren’t your thing, you will find green spaces both around the town and hidden in the centre, offering a space to walk, relax and unwind.

The Big Names

With established business parks prevalent in Camberley, the town has several high profile employers: S C Johnson Ltd, Siemens, Toshiba and Merrill Lynch to name a few. For lovers of the office cake run, doughnut connoisseurs Krispy Kreme are based in Camberley, the thought of which would certainly inspire us to linger nearby…

Often considered a comparatively new town, Camberley actually traces its roots back to the Iron Age when a fort was established at Caesar’s Camp. Now a home to both established and rejuvenated cultural spaces as well as the very modern Atrium, it is this balance of heritage and modernisation with quirky additional features that makes Camberley a truly unique place to work.
